Description

Phenytoin sodium is an antiepileptic drug indicated to control seizures or fits by decreasing the abnormal and excessive activity of the nerve cells in the brain. The drug can be intravenously injected or orally consumed in the form of tablets. It is useful in the prevention of tonic-clonic seizures (also known as grand mal seizures) and focal seizures, but not absence seizures. Phenytoin works by altering the sodium channels present in the brain that are responsible for inducing seizures of a different kind. The phenytoin sodium tablets are not for self-medication and should only be taken when prescribed by a doctor.

Before taking the tablets, carefully read all the instructions given in the manual. Inform your doctor if you are allergic to phenytoin or similar drugs. The dosage should be unique to each patient as there is wide inter-patient variability in the usage of phenytoin. The drug should be introduced in smaller dosages with gradual increments over time. Phenytoin is a potent drug that elicits moderate to severe side effects in its users. Some common side effects are headache, nausea, vomiting, constipation, dizziness, etc.
