Description

Sertraline Tablet is a type of antidepressant known as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) that is used for treating depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Depression is classified as a mood disorder characterised by feelings of sadness, difficulty sleeping, or a diminished ability to enjoy life as before. OCD is a mental health condition marked by intrusive thoughts or ideas (obsessions) that lead to repetitive actions (compulsions). Panic disorder is associated with anxiety and involves sudden feelings of fear that arise without any actual danger. PTSD is a psychological disorder that arises after experiencing a highly emotional or frightening event and shares symptoms with both anxiety and depression. Social anxiety disorder (social phobia) is characterised by significant anxiety or distress in social settings.

How Does Sertraline 25 mg Tablet Work?

Sertraline Tablet contains the active ingredient Sertraline, which functions by blocking the reabsorption of released serotonin into nerve cells. This action increases serotonin activity (a neurotransmitter) in the brain, which plays a crucial role in regulating mood, behaviour, and emotions. Consequently, Sertraline assists in alleviating depression, boosting mood, and addressing anxiety symptoms like fear and panic.

Directions For Use and Its Side Effects

Sertraline can be taken with or without food according to your doctor’s recommendations, and it should be swallowed whole with a glass of water. Avoid breaking, crushing, or chewing the tablet. Your physician will advise you on the dosage frequency of Sertraline based on your health condition. Some individuals may experience side effects such as drowsiness, dizziness, insomnia (difficulty sleeping), dry mouth, nausea, headaches, diarrhoea, fatigue, or ejaculation issues. Most of these side effects generally do not require medical intervention and typically resolve over time. However, if any side effects persist or worsen, it is important to consult your physician.

Precautions To Be Taken

  • If you have an allergy to Sertraline or any other medications, please inform your physician.
  • Sertraline is approved only for treating obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in children aged 6 to 17 years and is not intended for other conditions in patients under 18 years of age.
  • Its use during pregnancy is not recommended, particularly in the last trimester, as it may lead to serious complications in the baby, such as persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN), which can cause the baby to appear bluish and breathe rapidly. Therefore, please seek medical advice if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
  • Sertraline may pass into breast milk, so consult your doctor if you are breastfeeding.
  • Caution should be exercised when prescribing Sertraline to elderly patients, as they face a higher risk of low sodium levels in the blood.
  • If you have thoughts of self-harm or suicide before starting Sertraline, inform your doctor, as these thoughts may intensify during the initial days of treatment.
  • It is essential not to combine Sertraline with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIS), such as moclobemide and methylene blue, or opioids for depression treatment, as this may result in severe adverse reactions.
